COL Gallery is pleased to announce a new exhibition of works by Francisco Moreno, opening September 18th. Moreno explores themes of identity, myth-making, and historical narrative, with a recent focus on the playful yet symbolically charged motif of the squirrel. Far from whimsical, these trickster figures disrupt historical and religious tableaux, destabilizing hierarchies and inviting reinterpretation. Their energy and wit inject humor while also serving as avatars for the artist—curious, subversive, and resistant to dominant frameworks. Though not part of Mexican iconography, the squirrels bridge American suburban familiarity with the ornate language of Mexican colonial art, reflecting Moreno’s bicultural experience and situating his work between classical history and contemporary culture.
